Here at the Flat Creek Dulcimer Shop in Hardy, AR we make three different styles of
Hammered Dulcimers. All are handcrafted in our shop. We designed our 9/8 Backpacker model
HDB to be small (19"x 10"), lightweight (4 pounds), and portable. The water
based lacquer finish is water and sun resistant, making it perfect for camping, hiking, or
traveling. The economical price makes it
attractive to first time hammered
dulcimer buyers or as an easily portable backup for experienced players. The side rails
are hard maple and the top and bottom rails are maple or walnut. The top and back are 5-ply
1/4" Baltic birch. Our Backpacker comes with an instruction book, tuning chart and
tablature guides (they fit under the strings and identify each string for easy learning),
tuning wrench, hammers, and a playing leg for holding the Backpacker at a comfortable
playing angle. An optional padded nylon case with an accessory compartment is also
available.
We feel that our 12/11 models are the best priced full sized Hammered Dulcimers
available. A full rich sound with lots of volume make this all the hammered dulcimer you
will ever need. Both models are made alike but during the finishing process, we add two
coats of black lacquer to the Black topped
model HDK. The black top reduces reflection
and makes the strings easier to see. Like our Backpackers, we use hard maple for the
tuning pin block and maple or walnut for the top and bottom rails, with 1/4" Baltic birch ply
for the top and back. Both 12/11’s also have solid hardwood rosettes inlaid into the soundholes. Each 12/11 also includes an instruction book, tuning chart and tablature
guides, tuning wrench, hammers, and playing leg. A padded nylon case with pocket is also
available.
We
also make a 15/14 model based on our popular 12/11 model. Available in
both natural Baltic Birch or black top, the larger sound chambers and additional
strings give a louder sound with the extra range. Each 15/14 also includes
an instruction book, tuning chart and tablature guides, tuning wrench, hammers,
and playing leg. A padded nylon case with pocket is also available.

Our own Double Sided Hammers are an excellent addition for your new hammered dulcimer. Each of the 5 designs are 8.5” long with Maple hammers and Walnut handles and have a piece of leather attached to one side. The wood side gives a bright, louder sound while the leather side gives a softer, muted sound, giving you the option for creating a distinct mood for each song you play. Each pair is $24.50.
